Weekend Writing Warriors

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors mini hop! Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished.

Today I'm offering another small sampling from
Loving Leonardo - The Quest (book 2 in the ongoing series). The story began as news taken from 2013's headlines. I combined the talking points of the day, gave them a Victorian spin, and created a polyamorous romance written with an unusual touch of reader-interactive art history.

First my 8, then details after:

My eye was caught by a shriveled slovenly woman begging on the street below who had a babe in arms and no fewer than seven hungry, filthy children in orbit around her skirts. Within a few feet, a rotund cardinal with his bright red robes and matching wide-brimmed biretta walked by happily devouring his pastry. He didn’t give the starving children a second glance, not even the toddling child who held a beseeching hand out as he walked by.

The sad image took my mind as I dug for a handkerchief in the top compartment of my trunk. The entire city was a dichotomy, and I did not like it here.

With a stack of coin tied up in my handkerchief, I returned to the window and whistled for the mother’s attention. Waving her closer, I tossed the bundle out the window. The tallest of the lot, I assume her eldest, ran to pick it up, then hurried back to his mother excitedly.

What just happened:

Nicolas finds Rome a place of extremes.

An award winning love story.
An adventure series with more to come!

  2. Rose, you paint a picture so vivid that from the first sentence I was there wanting to lend a helping hand. Thanks for a stirring snippet.

    1. Thanks Charmaine. This view was similar to the experience my son and daughter had when they backpacked through Europe. They both said Rome was the dichotomy..extreme poor and extreme wealth all crammed in one little spot.

  3. I love historical fiction and how interesting to base it on modern times. This paints such a vivid picture of the two extremes.

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the snippet, Debbie. I was elbow deep in another story and the midday news was playing on the TV (I keep it on for the dogs. They love commercials) That particular day it was all about who couldn't get married, who didn't have control over their lives, greed, politics, etc, and suddenly it occurred to me the suffragettes were fighting for many of the same things 100 years ago and here it was still happening. I wrote both books in this series in 10 days. I have more books planned. I guess I have opinions!

  6. Great imagery! I love the line "in orbit around her skirts". This snippet establishes the character very well. Great 8 :)

  7. It's often the people who can spare the most that have the least to give, since they don't understand what it's like to have so little. But Nicolas will have to accept this is the way the world works--or try to change it!

    1. That's so true, Caitlin. The news on TV the day this story popped into my head was all about the worst in people -- bigotry, heartlessness, selfishness, hate, cruelty and more. I was under a full head of steam when I wrote it. A bit of indignation goes a long way.
