Setting the Stage~
For 3000 years Ashkewheteasu held constant vigil at his wife's burial mound. Today he discovers the burial desecrated. What he's seeing is an archaeological inventory racing the clock to catalog the burial before the bulldozers come. There's an industrial park slated to be built there. Seeing his wife's bones comes as a shock.

My 8~

“Aiyanna my love, my heart. I have watched over you through time but I can watch no longer. Please forgive me, I have failed you….” His throat choked close. Swallowing hard, he whispered to the earth that half-covered his wife, “Again.”
Kneeling beside the dirt-encrusted bones, he pulled the cover away to expose them fully. The small bones of the baby he knew laid with its mother had dissolved in the acids of the soil. Gently digging through the loam between the exposed rib bones, his fingers found the bird stone, its cord long since returned to the earth. Holding it now, he remembered...

Marketing for Romance Writers' Book Hooks #MFRWhooks

It's Wednesday -- time for the Marketing for Romance Writers Book Hooks mini hop! Participants post 6-8 sentences from their novel.
Today I'm offering a bit from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 2 in the ongoing series) ~ a story taken from an actual urban legend and ancient Native American lore.


Setting the Stage: John Redleaf can scarcely believe Ash was the injured dog whose life he saved let alone the ancient shaman from the legends of his people. 
Sensing Ash means to confront Eli (aka Eluwilussit the Spider), John seeks him out to talk him out of going alone. In this scene he finds the medicine man deep in meditation. It affects John too.



My Eight: 
Bird stone in hand, the holy man sat cross-legged before the woodstove, lightly rocking forward and back, chanting under his breath. Not wanting to disturb an obvious trance, John quietly took a seat on the sofa. Though he felt odd intruding on this private moment, the melodious chanting had a hypnotic quality that drew him in. He soon found himself drifting. He’d joined the Marines shortly after veterinary school, drawn by the allure of paying down substantial student debt. Only three months in, Iraq invaded Kuwait. The United States went to war and so did he. Flashes of his time in the military came into his awareness — people he’d known, things he’d been a part of, and things he'd rather not see again.

Weekend Writing Warriors

Today I'm offering another small sampling from book 2 in The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo series. It's a story inspired by ancient lore and modern urban legend.
 
First my 8, then details after ~

Eluwilussit woke to find himself curled into a ball, his hands protectively covering his genitals. The fire was almost out. He had no idea how long he’d traveled for peyote tended to steal time. Retracing his visions as best he could, he remembered that he’d beat the wall of the White World with his fists, remembered too that he’d slashed himself to get the attention of its inhabitants. 

Sitting up, he was met with a stench that indicated he’d fouled himself under Mescalito’s influence. Checking himself over in the light of the small blaze, he found his skin smooth, clean and otherwise unmarred. Perhaps the stink was only a memory lingering in his mind like the rest. The Red World and its inhabitants were foul.
Behind the scenes: Under the influence of psychotropic mescalin, Eli attempted to enter the White Spirit world but found himself in the hellish dessicated landscape of the Red Realm (hell). Witnessing the shape-shifting abilities of Ash and their teacher Nawkaw through the veil that divides the spirit word, Eli becomes enraged and tries to draw their attention. Instead, the forsaken ones come and discover he has one foot in the world of the living and one foot in theirs. Fascinated, they demand he play their game. He pays their price and receives a gift. Let's just say Eli has brought back more than a stench.

Weekend Writing Warriors

 

It's Sunday and I'm participating in the Weekend Writing Warriors mini hop! The deal is to post 8 sentences from a writing project, published or unpublished.

This time I'm offering another small sampling from book 1 in my legend-inspired romance ~
The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book1 Ashewheteasu)  

First my 8, then details follow:

Averting her gaze, she thanked him for the compliment.

Ash had seen women blush before, but never on a white-skinned woman, and never this bright and lovely. “You look away again, why is this?”

His words made her feel unaccountably shy. In the awkward silence that followed, she poked at her milkshake with her straw. Maybe it was just that she found him an extremely attractive and very compelling man or perhaps it was his bearing. He carried himself like he stepped out of one those ethnographic portrait photos taken of Native American men in the 1800s. Like many of those images, Ash too, had a regal quality about him. 

The scene: Ash showed up at the animal clinic to help. Erroneously believing her boss sent him, Livie gratefully puts him to work on an inordinately busy day. After work, she takes the new employee out to a hotdog joint as a thank you. She has no idea he lives in her house as a dog.

The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book2 Eluwilussit)  

First my 8, then details follow:

Ash was undeniably striking, as were the others in their dance regalia, but he was also more somehow – the ancient shaman was history come alive. There was an unusual dichotomy to Ash. He was a relative stranger to the modern world despite having assimilated so much. Still, if you didn’t know the truth of him, you’d never guess he was three-thousand years old Medewii with an astounding ability. Here in this setting with the other men in contrast, his regal bearing was impossible to miss. Ash moved with a wild, indefinable grace, no doubt the effect of assuming the body of animals and birds through millennia. It was as if his ability to shape-shift had imbued him with those wild attributes. The newly adopted son of Absalom and Mayweather Redleaf still carried that ancient wildness within him, only Ashkewheteasu’s name had changed.

The scene: Here we have the dancing as part of an adoption ceremony that welcomes Ash into his new family.

Eli sees himself in the mirror

First my 3, then details follow:

Tears of frustrated rage fell. How dare they do this to him! His anger transformed his body as he stood before the mirror and saw himself for the first time.

Behind the scenes: At this point in the story, Eli tried to enter the White Spirit world but found himself in the Red Realm instead. This is where the forsaken dwell on the other side of the veil that divides the spirit realms -- in other words, Hell. Through the veil he witnesses the shape-shifting abilities of Ash and their teacher Nawkaw. Outraged, he wants this gift for himself. 

The forsaken ones had never met a shaman with the ability to enter the spirit worlds, and never one with murders attached to his soul. They tell him they too can bestow such a gift, but it comes with a price. Naturally, Eli says yes.
