Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday (RO)(FA)

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished. Today it's another snippet from my soon-to-be-released bit of fiction ~ The Changeling.

First my 8, followed by details~ Aside from momentarily raising their heads to see who walked among them, the ewes paid him little attention. Hobs frequented barns and stables, sharing gossip, grain, and milk, and chasing rats and weasels away in return. If Queen Oonagh ever discovered it was he who meddled in her plots, the pieces of him would be too small to bait fishhooks for sticklebacks. He must have voiced this last thought aloud for the lone ram bleated in reply. He told it, “You’re right Master Ram, she’ll not be happy with me. Yes, yes, yes, that is most certain.”

The ram bleated a question.

Billy told him, “She plans to sacrifice the young prince.”

What just happened~

Billy Blin the Hob is pulling strings behind the scenes to make sure the mad Fae queen doesn't harm her sister Orlaith any more than she already has. Unknown to the queen, Billy placed Orlaith's half-Fae child in his father's household to be raised in a manner befitting a prince. Though the newborn prince is a changeling, at least he still lives. Now, twenty-four years after the deed, Queen Oonagh knows where her changeling nephew is. She sends Billy for him, and the hob intentionally bungled things. In this scene, Billy heads back to the Fae court of the Aos Sidhe. He's anticipating the queen's displeasure.

What this story is about~

I adore fairytales. The Changeling is a Victorian spin on the fairytale of Tam Lin -- a story taken from
an old ballad from the borderlands of Scotland.

  1. Billy's pretty brave, as he attempts to do the right things. I loved the visual of him in the barn...excellent excerpt.
