#MFRWHooks The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo

MFRW Authors Blog
It's Wednesday and time for the Marketing for Romance Writers Books Hooks mini hop! (see linky list below) Participants post 6-8 sentences from their novel. Today I'm offering a bit from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo(book 1 in the series - Ashkewheteasu)

Setting the Stage~
For 3000 years Ashkewheteasu held constant vigil at his wife's burial mound. Today he discovers the burial desecrated. What he's seeing is an archaeological inventory racing the clock to catalog the burial before the bulldozers come. There's an industrial park slated to be built there. Seeing his wife's bones comes as a shock.

My 8~

“Aiyanna my love, my heart. I have watched over you through time but I can watch no longer. Please forgive me, I have failed you….” His throat choked close. Swallowing hard, he whispered to the earth that half-covered his wife, “Again.”
Kneeling beside the dirt-encrusted bones, he pulled the cover away to expose them fully. The small bones of the baby he knew laid with its mother had dissolved in the acids of the soil. Gently digging through the loam between the exposed rib bones, his fingers found the bird stone, its cord long since returned to the earth. Holding it now, he remembered...

Hot for Friday with Book Boyfriends Cafe

Time for the Book Boyfriends Cafe's Hot for Friday hop . Here's a small sampling from Enchanted Skye. This tale was inspired by two interesting tidbits ~ an old maritime legend of tears and sea water, and the actual genealogy belonging to one Scottish family living today. They say as far back as the family legends go, they are Selkie. Why not?

Setting the stage: At this point in the story, Jenna has fled a stalking ex in Chicago, scattered her grandmother's ashes on the Isle of Skye, got her rented car stuck, and walked in an icy downpour to an inn. A comedy of errors gets her locked in a room overnight with a stranger. Emotion getting the better of her, she vents on him and then slams a rather large scotch. The stranger doesn't seem so irritating now. Neither know her earlier tears have caught this Selkie in a dangerous charm.

She arched against his hand for more, which he gave. Slowly pumping he kissed her lips between his words, “But ye… must tell me… Jenna. D’ ye wish… me… to continue?”
   “Mmm, mmm, yes…I think so…”
There was no need to ask again. Gathering her up in his arms, Alex carried her to his bed and laid her there. Held closed by the lower buttons, the flannel shirt twisted to reveal one breast and her wild uncombed hair spilled over his pillow. Her uninhibited fingers toyed with her uncovered nipple, while her bent knee swung back and forth invitingly slow.
His animal senses sharp, he could smell her now, a heady note of desire in the sensorial symphony of sea spray, scotch, peat, and soap. Though a tremor of desire fumbled his hands over the zipper, he knew he’d rip the clothes from his body just to have her. He finally managed to drop his jeans and his tenting boxers were quickly discarded with the rest. When his full length sprang free of its confines, her knee momentarily paused. Standing before her with a blazing hard-on, his breath froze at the look in her eyes.
Jenna watched him strip his clothing. Sultry slurred words hurried him along. “You have a very …nice…” Her words trailed off. She licked her lips.
His mind extrapolated the rest he wanted to hear. “I’m glad ye think so, love.” He was driven. Never in his life did he want a woman as badly as he wanted her.
He held himself. Words husky with desire, he whispered in awe, “I ache for ye, Jenna. I ache like I never have.”
Kneeling at the end of the bed, he kissed the top of her foot. Her knee once more swung to and fro. Seeing invitation in that sensual display, he kissed up the length of her leg, murmuring heated declarations of desire between kisses.
Though a part of him was keenly aware they didn’t know one another, another part of him was certain he’d known her soul forever. “I can hardly control this hunger for ye. Will ye allow me to love you?”

“Hunger?” she asked breathlessly, as though his words weren’t fully registering. Again the knee stopped, this time falling wide.
“Aye, hunger. I’ve thought of nothing else since I first set my eyes upon ye.” Ascending now, he kissed the place above her knee, relishing the heat of her on his lips. Kissing her smooth inner thigh, he murmured against her flesh, “Will ye allow this starving man—” he kissed the velvet between, “—to bring ye pleasure?” He kissed again firmly this time. Tasting how ready she was on his lips, he licked them before asking, “Please say yes, Jenna. Please.”

Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday (PA)(RO)

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished. Today it's a bit from Enchanted Skye ~ a scorching contemporary tale.

First my 8, followed by details~
From the outside, the hidden entrance to the sea lay mostly submerged between three jutting crags. Buffeted by intermittent cascades of seawater and back-lit by the light of day, the cave took on
an eerie blue-green glow.

Alex dashed though the passage stripping from his clothes on the run, his waterskin tucked tight under his arm. When hentered the rocky cavern, he was naked and breathless. Flinging the smooth skin over his shoulders, he hunkered down. The transformation was instantaneous. Dynamically streamlined flippers appeared where arms and legs had been a moment before. He flexed his muscles and arched his back, then turned his head from side to side to fit more comfortably within his second skin.

What just happened~
At this point in the story Alex has no idea he's under the effects of a charm. All he knows there's a chance to see Jenna. Taking his Selkie skin with him, he takes a shortcut.

What this story is about~
This tale was inspired by two interesting tidbits ~ an old maritime legend of tears and sea water, and the actual genealogy belonging to one Scottish family living today. They say as far back as the family legends go, they are Selkie. Why not?

“Ms. Anderson gives us another blending of ancient legends and modern life. In my opinion this is an outstanding story with the wonderful, surprise ending I’ve come to expect from this author. If you like reading smart and sexy romance novels, look no further. My only complaint would be Ms. Anderson needs to write faster!!!”

Hot for Friday with Book Boyfriends Cafe

Time for the Book Boyfriends Cafe's Hot for Friday hop .

T
oday's theme  ~ Hot Encounter. Here's a small sampling from my blending of urban myth and ancient legend ~ The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 in the ongoing series)

Setting the stage: Ash and Livie share a moment that's not quite private.

A short time later, Olivia hurried up the walkway, Ash following behind. Pausing to find the right key to fit into the lock, she said, “I have to file some paperwork before I head home to my—” and Ash surprised her, pulling her into his arms and kissing her. Her sentence ended breathlessly, “—dog.”

His lower half pressed firmly against hers, he effectively pinned her up against the door. With palms flat against the glass on either side of her head, he braced himself and kissed her again, sliding his tongue hungrily between her soft pink lips. And there they stood, each lost in the wonder of what the other made them feel, oblivious to the cars speeding past the clinic. Her shirt and bra had somehow hitched up and bared her breasts to kisses that traced their descent in a fiery path down her neck and left a glorious wash of desire in their wake. There was no mistaking the warm female scent that declared she wanted him as desperately as he wanted her. Just as his head dipped to draw her pink nipple into his mouth, a truck driver’s horn blared as the big rig passed. The spell broken, they jumped apart. Ash was far more startled than Olivia as she quickly covered herself with fumbling hands. Backlit by the lights within the clinic, they’d put on a good show.

He licked the taste of her from his lips and smiled at her endearing attempt at modesty. After so many years alone, controlling himself was difficult. As much as he craved to lose himself in her, this was not the place for their first joining. Wrapping his arms around her once more, he summoned his willpower, and whispered warmly at her ear, “Oh Livie, I would have you now, but not here for others to see.”

She swallowed, then stammered, “Uh, yes, uh we’d better stop before we run out of time and I um … I need to finish up the … uh … paperwork here.” She sounded like her brains had been addled. They had. “So … where do I pick you up?”

“I’ll meet you right here.” His passionate embrace lifting her to her toes and cracking her vertebrae, he kissed her again.

Closing the door behind him, Olivia watched him walk away. Her lips were tingling. Everything was tingling.

Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday (RO)(MTS)(PA)

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished. Today it's The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 2). A tale inspired by a local urban legend and enhanced with ancient lore.

First my 8, followed by details~It had been ages since he’d been here. For nearly three thousand years, Eli’s grief and anger had kept him away from the land of his people. His eyes were drawn from the road so often that he decided to pull over for a moment and lose himself in the memories. Visually, the rolling hills and valleys were nearly the same as when his Bear clan lived here, except for some hills cut in two by the highway. The giant groves were gone and now much smaller trees filled small pockets where their parent trees once stood. Where animal trails had crisscrossed the landscape, roads and highways bisected what was left of re-sprouted oak groves. Open prairie glades where elk and buffalo roamed were now pesticide- and herbicide-soaked corn and soybean fields. The route taken by his people to their yearly hunting, fishing, and foraging grounds came back to him as though he’d walked it the day before.

What just happened~
His true identity exposed, Eli leaves the reservation and returns to the land where he once lived. Needless to say, changes occurred since this ancient shaman was here last.

I felt in love with the wounded Ash and his bond with the animal-loving Olivia. And I cringed at the antagonist Eli’s tortured mishaps. The characters were well written to create conflict, tension, in a smartly woven plot that takes the reader to the past, to tribal gatherings, into the world of what we don’t expect or imagine with the very construct of our own bodies and physiology (depicted in Ash’s character). This is paranormal and fantasy at its best where the imagination is the scene setter driven by the author’s well-crafted words that brings the action to life. ~A Reader

Marketing for Romance Writers' Book Hooks #MFRWhooks

It's Wednesday -- time for the Marketing for Romance Writers Book Hooks mini hop!
Participants post 6-8 sentences from their novel.
Today I'm offering a small sampling from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 in the ongoing series) It's a story inspired by a local urban legend and ancient Native American lore.

Setting the Stage
:To be a man of Livie's world, Ash needs
modern clothing. Coming from a culture of trade, he finds what he needs on a backyard clothesline.

The large Great Horned owl landed on the uppermost tree limb, his weight bending the branch as he struggled to perch with a stone knife and leather sheaf clutched in his talons. This was the best he had to offer of the few things he’d made. He’d seen the daily changes of clothing those around him wore and he couldn’t imagine what they traded for such largess.

Silently swooping, Ash landed on the ground just below the strings of clothing and used his night vision to choose the blue garment he'd seen earlier. Spreading his large wings, he flew to the railing and set the offering there. A moment later, he flew off into the twilight clutching a bunched-up denim shirt.

At the house next door, a woman standing at her kitchen window called to her husband watching TV in the next room, “Jim, you’re not going to believe what I just saw!”

Marketing for Romance Writers' Book Hooks #MFRWhooks

It's Wednesday -- time for the Marketing for Romance Writers Book Hooks mini hop! Participants post 6-8 sentences from their novel. Today I'm offering a bit from my a contemporary love story with an ancient twist ~ Enchanted Skye.

A tale about a family of Scottish Selkie and an American woman on the run named Jenna who unwittingly
unleashes an ancient charm and traps a Selkie unawares.

Setting the Stage:
Alex sees Jenna for the first time. He has no idea the danger her tears have put him in.

Meeting his eyes, she looked startled to see him so close. She rose slowly and backed away. His heart ached to watch her go and he found the feeling both perplexing and extraordinary. Then and there, he knew he had to meet her. Taking a breath, he plunged under the water and swam to the far side of the cliff where the sea cave sat undetected. On dry land now, inside the dark chamber, he peeled away his waterskin. And where flippers were a moment before, a man’s arms and legs appeared. Shaking out his spotted skin with a snap, he rolled it into a tight bundle and headed toward the passage.

Weekend Writing Warriors

It's Sunday --time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished. Today I'm offering a small sampling from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1) A tale inspired by a local urban legend and dressed up with ancient lore.

First my 8, followed by details~
He shifted into a feathered snake before taking the form of a mouse and working his way out of a sleeve. The movement caught the attention of an owl on its nightly hunting foray. Just as it was about to swoop low on silent wings, intent on nabbing the large field mouse, a naked man with a mouse tail and whiskers appeared. The owl, clearly startled, flew off into the night.

Laughing, Ash raised his arms and yelled after it, “This is not your night, my brotherrrr!”

Tail and whiskers absorbed into his changing form and once again bare skin grew feathers. He shifted into a raven — a six-foot-tall raven. Laughing at himself, he made his body small and flew fast to Livie’s home, albeit not in a straight line.

What just happened~
Ash,an ancient Native American Shaman, discovers beer. It's obviously a potent shaman's drink if it's capable of making one mindless. Here Ash is trying to make it back to Livie's house before she does. She has no idea he's actually the stray dog she hit with her car and is now caring for in her home.

Weekend Writing Warriors #8sunday

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished. Today I'm offering a small sampling from The Witchy Wolf and the Wendigo (book 1 in the ongoing series).

First my 8, then details after:

The large Great Horned owl landed on the uppermost tree limb, his weight bending the branch as he struggled to perch with a stone knife and leather sheaf clutched in his talons. This was the best he had to offer of the few things he’d made. He’d seen the daily changes of clothing those around him wore and he couldn’t imagine what they traded for such largess.

At the house next door, a woman standing at her kitchen window called to her husband watching TV in the next room. “Jim, you’re not going to believe what I just saw!”

Blurb:

What does an immortal Native American shaman do when the grave he’s sworn to watch over for all eternity disappears under urban development?
His purpose of guarding his wife’s burial mound is gone, Ashkewheteasu seeks to end his immortal existence. In his despair, Ash assumes the form of a wolf and steps in front of a moving car and into the life of Dr. Olivia “Livie” Rosalini. The veterinarian saves the animal’s life, and in the process saves the man within. Livie has no idea the wolfish dog she’s taken into her home and grows to love is a magical being seeking to win her heart as a man.

While Ash is learning a new world filled with new love, friendship, and happiness, an old menace makes plans to steal it all away; just as he had 3000 years before.

Behind the scenes for the snippet above: To be a man of Livie's world, Ash needs modern clothing. Coming from a culture of trade, he finds what he needs on a backyard clothesline.
